Deacon John Lee: dedicated to church & family

Deacon John Henry Lee, who dedicated himself to his church and his beloved family, died April 19, 2007 at New Island Hospital in Bethpage. He was 86 years old.

Born July 28, 1920 in Vernon, Washington County, Florida to Kattie and Acey Lee he was in the U.S. Army as a Construction Machine Operator in the China Burma Operations. He moved to Amityville in 1955 with his wife and lived there for 52 years.

Mr. Lee worked in the Northport V.A. Hospital as a health care aide for more than 40 years until his retirement in 1982. He was a world traveler and sports enthusiast who spent several weeks every year for the last 52 years fishing at Holmes Creek, where he grew up.

Mr. Lee was a dedicated parishioner and a member of the men's fellowship at Grace Community Church in Amityville and served as trustee, usher and a deacon. He was a life member of the 369th Veterans Association in New York City.

He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Oneida S. (Shackelford); his son, Nickie T.; his siblings: Emma Neal of Panama City, Florida, Eartha Mae Shackelford of Port St. Joe, Florida, Ethel M. Sheran of Los Angeles, California, Eunice Steen Williams of Los Angeles, California, Odis of Vernon, Florida and Olden of Panama City, Florida; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins and his church family. He was predeceased by his son, Reginald J. in 1994.

A Funeral Mass was held at the Grace Community Church in Amityville on April 23, 2007 with Rev. Robert L. Burgess, pastor, officiating. Interment followed in the Sylvania A.M.E. Cemetery in Vernon, Florida. The J.F. Goode Funeral Home in Amityville handled arrangements.
