We're fed up with this country's wink-and-nod immigration policies

Let's preface this editorial by saying, no, in fact we do not expect this country to round up 12 million illegal aliens, put them on boats and planes and deport them back to their own countries. And neither do most Americans.

That being said, here's what we do expect our elected officials to do.

First, set aside any changes to the current immigration policy, regulations and laws that are failing to do the job intended in large because they are being ignored. Then enforce the current law.

Second, comply with the recently enacted federal legislation to close our borders by installing fencing and by utilizing the latest, most effective technical means available. The effort made to date is abysmally pathetic and condescending to the American people.

Third, expand the army of border patrol guards dramatically, giving them the authority necessary to do their jobs. And, when they do it, don't be so quick to second guess their actions under what have become battlefield conditions.

Fourth, remove every incentive that renegade judges and lawmakers have put into place to encourage illegal immigrants to come here in the first place. These include no-questions-asked opportunities for free health care and social services; loans for higher education, government subsidies and more, all at the expense of the American taxpayers who, in most instances, are having a difficult time affording those things for themselves and for their own families.

Fifth, make corporate America accountable for hiring illegal workers and stop patronizing the American people with the argument that unless we invite an unchecked flow of illegal immigrants across our borders we won't be able to pick lettuce or cut our own lawns.

Finally, Americans need real assurances that at every level of government policies are in place that are protecting this country from terrorists who are taking full advantage of our naive and emotionally driven liberal immigration program to come here and kill us. That they are is evidenced by the attack on 9-11 and the ensuing plots that to date, have fortunately been uncovered.

The current discussion in Washington then about a new immigration policy and amnesty should be shelved. It will cost hard working legal Americans, their children and grandchildren, trillions of dollars, burden each and every one of our social programs and dramatically alter the nature and character of American society. It will, by the most conservative of estimates, bring more than 100 million new immigrants into the United States over the next 20 years, one third of the total current immigrants. Let every Democrat and Republican in Washington know that you fully understand that the proposed immigration bill would transform this country socially, economically and politically, giving it away to a new class of Americans who have shown they have no compunction about breaking the law to reach their own ends, however simple or sinister.
