America needs a sound immigration policy

Once again, the American people have been given a wake-up call about the dangers of illegal immigration- and yet too many, including their representatives in Washington, continue to dream on.

The latest reminders about the dangers of an open and sloppy immigration policy came in the form of would-be terrorists bent on killing American soldiers on an American base at Ft. Dix, New Jersey. Only by the grace of an alert citizen was this terrorist attack uncovered and averted. Among those charged were individuals who were in this country illegally.

We can continue to talk about the difficulties of securing our borders, the impossibilities of monitoring a legitimate system of immigration and the humanity of sending those who come here without regard for our laws, often committing additional crimes, from whence they came. Or, we can decide to face these harsh realities and put into place a secure system of immigration that will secure America and Americans from the grave risks of our current laws and policies.

Washington can afford to fiddle no more. Our lawmakers on both sides of the aisle must act responsibly to protect the people they took an oath to protect and preserve and come up with an immigration policy we can LIVE with here in America.
