Gunman robs Copiague bank

A lone gunman walked into the Washington Mutual Bank at 895 Merrick Road in Copiague on Monday, announcing that he was there to rob the bank. Police gave this account:

At approximately 9:44 a.m. the robber, described as a white male, and armed with a semiautomatic handgun entered the bank and told everyone to get on the floor. He then proceeded to three teller stations where he demanded that each teller put cash in a bag that he brought with him.

The tellers complied with the robber's demands by giving him cash from their drawers. They also put a dye pack into the bag. The robber then fled the bank via the north entrance, through the parking lot, and was last seen heading west on Stewart Street .

The dye packs were activated after the robber left the bank, which caused him to discard some of the proceeds on Stewart Street .

At the time of the robbery six customers and six employees were in the bank. None were injured during the crime.

The robber is described as a white male, in his late 30s to early 40s, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall, has a medium build and has light stubble that is partially gray. He was wearing a dark-colored baseball cap with a light-colored brim, dark sunglasses, a dark hooded sweatshirt with a zippered front and jeans. The robber's hand may be stained with dye.
