Copiague fifth grade students D.A.R.E. to Stay Healthy
Over a ten-week period, the students spent many hours with their Suffolk County D.A.R.E. Officer, Police Officer George Lynagh, focusing on various ways to effectively resist peer pressure and develop self-esteem. During the ceremony Officer Lynagh addressed the students, praising them for a job well done. "If the D.A.R.E. Program helps one student then it was worth it," stated Officer Lynagh. Two special guests able to attend the Deauville Gardens graduation and speak with the students were Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy and County Legislature Wayne Horsley. "You don't have a second chance to make the right decision the first time," stated Levy. "So, the first time someone asks you if you want drugs or alcohol think back to the D.A.R.E. Program and the nine ways to say no." To conclude the D.A.R.E. Program, the students were asked to write personal essays describing what they learned from the program and how they planned to remain drug and alcohol free. An essay winner from each class was given the opportunity to read his/her essay at graduation in front of family, friends, and fellow students. To congratulate the students for having their essay chosen, they received an official Suffolk County Police Officer badge, worn while on duty.
