Thelma Tejada: beloved Amityville matriarch

Loving grandmother, mother, wife and longtime Amityville resident Thelma A. Tejada died March 5, 2007 at New Island Hospital in Bethpage. She was 77 years old.

Born in Santiago, Dominican Republic to Oscar and Juana (Tineo) on October 27, 1929, she later came to the United States and settled in Amityville.

For many years she worked as a clothing buyer for May's Department Store in Massapequa which used to be on Sunrise Highway and was a longtime member of St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church in Amityville.

Mrs. Tejada leaves behind her husband, Antero of Amityville; her daughters: Alice B. of Florida and Rosemary Torres of Amityville; her grandchildren: Carlos E. and A. Vanessa; her great grandchildren: Karolina Torres, Alejandra and Enrique; her siblings: Hilda and Eleanor Lago, both of Florida, Luis of Syracuse, New York, Jeanette Santos of Amityville, Norma J. Buggi of New Jersey and Dr. Daniel Martinez of Buffalo, New York; as well as other loved ones and friends.

Deacon John Sheehan conducted a prayer service at the Powell Funeral Home, Amityville, on March 8, 2007. Father Richard T. Stelter, pastor, St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church, officiated at a Mass of Christian Burial assisted by the Consolation Ministry and members of the family. Interment followed in Amityville Cemetery.
