Up and coming authors to have original works produced and performed at Farmingdale State College

The Babylon Arts Council is proud to present the 1st Annual New Playwrights Festival on Friday, April 13, 8 to 10 p.m. at Farmingdale State College.

In conjunction with a new theater company known as the Festival Group, the Babylon Arts Council has partnered with the Distinguished Speakers Program of Farmingdale State College to develop the New Playwright's Festival, an event that offers the opportunity for playwrights, actors, directors and audiences to experience new works by up and coming authors.

Plays for the event were solicited through the Internet, print publications and word-of-mouth. Well over 300 plays were submitted from as far as Alaska, California, Colorado, Massachusetts as well as throughout the New York Metropolitian Area. All were carefully reviewed by a panel of highly accredited and respected theater professionals charged with the unenviable task of choosing the best six one-act plays to present.

With commitment to encouraging new and undiscovered authors and fostering the art of play writing, the Babylon Arts Council and Festival Group have set their sights on making the New Playwright's Festival an educational experience by incorporating a discussion on the art of script writing and development on the Farmingdale State College Campus. On Tuesday April 10, 11a.m. authors whose plays are being produced will hold an interactive discussion with Farmingdale students and the public to speak about their works, the process of writing scripts and general topics related to theater. The program is open to the public and will shed light on theater arts.

The following are the six one-act plays that were selected to be performed:

+Service of Process by Matthew Tomasino. A process server must do his job, but a quirky woman just won't let him in the door.

+Dawsey Nadgett by Judy Gebauer. A period piece featuring a tale about Han Christian Anderson overstaying his welcome in the home of Charles Dickens.

+Heartbeat by Elise Nash. A thriller based on the story of the classic Tell- Tale Heart.

+Motherblood by Saphira Linden and Susan Nisenbaum. An encounter between two mothers, One Israeli, the other Palestinian, both of whom have survived significant losses.

+American Marvel by Michael Burdick. The tale of super-villain and the alleged superhero he keeps locked away in his apartment.

+That Dress by Steve Strangio. A story of loss with one man's remembrance of his one true love.
