Florence Niles: historical society member, Girl Scout Leader Longtime Massapequa resident Florence G. Niles died February 21, 2007 at Shands at Lake Shore Hospital in Lake City, Florida. She was 98 years old and had lived in Massapequa for 53 years. She was born March 12, 1908 to Joseph and Florence (Mount) Powell in Brooklyn and grew up in Maspeth, Queens. After marrying she moved to the Nassau Shores area of Massapequa and about 15 years ago to Florida, to be closer to her sister. In addition to caring for her husband and home, she worked as an assistant secretary for the L.I. Scottish Rite in Rockville Centre and was very active in her community. Six times she acted as president of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, a member of the Amityville Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star for nearly 50 years and held the office of Worthy Matron in 1969 and 1988. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Nile, active in the Massapequa Historical Society, a 25-year Girl Scout leader and a 47-year active Grace Episcopal Church member who helped organize the first choir and sang solos. Mrs. Niles loved to show dogs such as Pomeranians and Wolf Hounds at the Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. She leaves behind her sister, Beatrice Strickland; her nephew, J. Bruce Hoffman and his wife Marion and their son Travis; as well as other loved ones and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Gustav A. in March of 1979 and her brother, Joseph Powell.
The Amityville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star held a Funeral Service at the Powell Funeral Home, Amityville, on February 28, 2007. Entombment followed in Pinelawn Memorial Park.
