Seniors lead Warriors; recognized at banquet
Each season the player who wears No. 31 usually has the best offensive statistics on the team and is generally the player everyone rallies around. It was no different this year. Senior RB Raymond Jones, who led the Warriors with 942 total yards (622 rushing) and six total touchdowns, was named the Offensive Player of the Year at this year's annual Amityville football awards banquet. Senior LB/TE Jerome Willis won the Hammer Award as the hardest hitter and was named the Linebacker of the Year and Overall Team MVP. "Jones is just a good all-around athlete," Amityville head coach Chris Taylor said. "Willis is our leader on defense and a real unselfish player. Whenever we needed a person to fill in for someone, he'd be there." Jones hasn't decided whether he'll play football or basketball in college, but will most likely attend a junior college first. "Ray is a very explosive part of our offense," Willis said. "Once we get the ball in his hands, anything can happen."
"I did everything I wanted to this year and worked really hard," says Willis, who will most likely drop back and play strong safety or corner back at RPI. "I worked hard to get myself out there and it happened." Willis led the team with 92 tackles and two interceptions. Since both Jones and Willis are seniors, they'll leave a big void in next year's Amityville attack, which will still feature a handful of veteran players. "Both are good kids and easy to coach," Taylor says. "They like being out there and they like being involved." Senior QB Dennis McDonough was given the Offensive MVP award. He is a second year starter and was the main cog which kept the offense running smooth this past season. He is looking to play baseball in college, though. Junior TE/LB Reggie Robinson was named the Receiver and Defensive Player of the Year and won the Warrior Award for being the player who most exemplifies the Amityville program in regards to commitment in football, academics and off-season conditioning. Robinson had 84 tackles and one interception this season. Junior Sam Scott-Baugh was the Defensive Lineman of the Year, junior DB Kevin Roberson was the Secondary Player of the Year and junior Angel Mazara was named Offensive Lineman of the Year. "Angel made all the necessary adjustments up front this year," Taylor said. "He was our most consistent lineman." Other award winners include senior William Brookes (Iron Man Award), junior Rance Sinclair (O'Wayne Whitten Award for overall leadership and excellence) and junior Norgel Palmer (Most Improved Player of the Year).
Most of the award winners were juniors, so this past season's 3-5 record could be reversed or easily improved next year.
