St. Martin of Tours School celebrates 86th anniversary
In 1921, when the school was opened there were only eight classrooms and five sisters teaching. The school grew so rapidly, however, that in 1938 another room was added and a kindergarten was started. The teaching staff was increased to nine sisters. By 1952, the school had 504 children enrolled and had to turn away more than 400 because of the lack of classroom space. It was obvious that another expansion was needed. Sixteen classrooms, 2 kindergartens, a cafeteria, principal's office, kitchen , library, teacher's room, society meeting room, nurses room and a gymnasium/ auditorium were completed in 1956. Twelve years later, the School Board had its first meeting, and conducted it's first PTA meeting, which today is known as the Home School Association. The current principal, Sister Maureen Galvin joined St. Martin's in 1987. Much growth was seen under Sister Maureen's direction. In 1989, the Pre-Kindergarten program began; in 1991, the computer program was started and in the late 1990s the nursery school program began. In 2004, a resource room was built to provide services such as speech to students at St. Martin's who require these services. In 2006, a science lab opened and a school psychologist became available to those students who needed that service. This year St. Martin of Tours joined the Catholic Middle School Athletic Association, which gives children in 6th through 8th grade an opportunity to compete in a myriad of athletic com- petitions. A Mommy and Me program was instituted as well as a 2-3 year old program. Currently there are 492 students enrolled in the school. Every year or so the school adds academic or athletic additions as well as improving the appearance of the school.
The school held a gala to celebrate this milestone this month.
