Burton “Pete” Mason, Jr.: 65, formerly of Amityville Burton E. Mason Jr., who grew up in Amityville and graduated from Amityville schools, died February 22, 2007 at his home in Florida after a long battle with esophageal cancer. He was 65 years old. Born November 9, 1942 in St. Albans, New York to Burton E. and Anne C. (Carlow), he later reached the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America and went on to become a Round Table Commissioner for the association. He lived on Bayview Avenue in Amityville for more than 30 years and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. For more than 10 years he ran a foreign exchange brokerage firm in Manhattan with his father and brother, and after selling the company to P. Murray Jones he remained as president until 1977. He then worked for FOREX USA and A.G. Edwards & Sons in Englewood, Florida as branch manager and in 2005 retired after 28 years as corporate vice president. After his retirement he became active with his community as a civic leader, for several youth organizations and in his local Methodist for the American Cancer Society. In his spare time he was an avid golfer and traveler and enjoyed attending Buccaneer football games with his family. Mr. Mason leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Geraldine L.; his children: Joseph B. of Englewood, Florida, James S. of Santa Monica, California, Peter O. of Englewood, Florida and Kathryn M. Whalen of North Port, Florida; his ten grandchildren; his siblings: William E. of Venice, Florida , James B. of Hicksville, New York and Sara M. Hill of Patten, Maine; as well as other loved ones and friends. A Funeral Mass was held on February 26, 2007 at the Englewood United Methodist Church, arranged by Lemon Bay Funeral Home, Englewood, Florida.
