Once again, Levy is right and his opponents are unreasonable

Once again. Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy is under fire for a proposal that takes a common-sense approach to the handling of illegal immigrants- key word in this sentence is "Illegal", which refers to the method these individuals used to enter this country. It also means they broke the law, circumvented our immigration policies and violated a system designed to establish equity for everyone and safety and security for Americans.

Add to that the fact that these "illegals" continued to break the law once they relocate in this country, and you have a pattern of behavior that speaks for itself.

Yet, Levy is being criticized because he believes that an illegal immigrant, convicted of other crimes after sneaking into this country, and incarcerated for those infractions, should be deported upon release from prison.

What exactly would his opponents have us do? Perhaps greet them at the Suffolk County jail and give them limousine service to a county-funded hotel? Set them up with free medical insurance, a no-show job and food stamps? Provide them with free college tuition all, at the expense of Suffolk's "legal" citizens.

Last year, Levy came under fire when he proposed that the Suffolk County Police work with U.S. Immigration officials to identify illegal immigrants arrested in the county and charged with a crime. Despite taking a tremendous amount of political heat for this, Levy persevered and the program has led to the County's ability to identify numerous individuals who not only entered this country illegally but who also pose a threat to national safety and security.

Concern and compassion is always the order of the day, and America must still recognize the benefits of integrating immigrants into our rich and diverse society. But it is a fatal mistake- key word in this sentence is "fatal"- to allow those sentiments to blind us to the dangers these people pose to our country in today's violent and terror-riddled world.

Levy, once again, has shown that he understands the difference between political pandering and political obligation. He faces the wrath of those blinded to reality by compassion because he understands the oath he took to protect and serve the citizens of Suffolk County. His proposal is sound and reasonable and deserves resounding support.
