John Martin: longtime Amityville resident & WWII veteran

Former longtime Amityville resident John C. Martin died February 19, 2007 at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick, Maryland. He was 92.

Born in West Hoboken, New Jersey to Humbert O., Sr. and Santina (Pollini) on April 21, 1914, he grew up in a house his father built on Carman Place in Amityville and graduated from Amityville High School in 1932. He later settled in Maryland.

During World War II, Mr. Martin served in the U.S. Army as an airplane and engine mechanic in the 410th Bomb Squadron of the 94th Bomb Group of the Air Offensive Europe, stationed in England and Scotland. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and received the Distinguished Unit Badge, the European Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his proud dedication.

According to his daughter, Mary, he worked as an accountant at Fairchild-Hiller Industries on Long Island and in Germantown, Maryland before his retirement. He loved to watch sports, sail, bowl and play golf in his spare time.

He leaves behind his children: Mary Elizabeth Baney and her husband Robert of Germantown, Maryland and Michael Burke of Ijamsville, Maryland; his grandchildren: Amy Eileen, Matthew Robert Baney and John Charles Baney; his sister, Louise Brockhoff of Amityville; his nephews and nieces: Derek Brockhoff, Kurt Brockhoff, Susan Edwards and William; as well as other loved ones and friends. He was predeceased by his wife of 25 years, Eileen Mary (Conzen) in 1973.

Rev. Father Randolph Jon Germinder, rector, St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Amityville, officiated at the funeral service at the Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, on February 23, 2007. Interment followed in the Long Island National Cemetery at Pinelawn with Military Honors.
