Merv Dolson: Artist and former North Amityville resident
Born December 22, 1922 in Mount Vernon, New York he grew up in North Amityville and, as a youth, was a volunteer firefighter. During his time in the U.S. Navy, 386- 14th Regiment, the decorated World War II veteran set the record for sit-ups, according to his family. His ribbons covered the American, Asiatic-Pacific and European Theaters. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he remained active in the U.S. Navy Armed Guard for 60 years. During the 50s and 60s Mr. Dolson shared his Navy knowledge as Commander of the Allied Nautical Cadets and the Fife & Drum Corp., youth organizations in Bellmore. For the last 60 years, he lived in Bellmore and summered at his Amagansett home. Since he was well-known for painting landscapes of Long Island's East End, his work earned him numerous awards and has been displayed in many museums and galleries in Long Island. His original painting of Jesus Christ hangs in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Amityville. Mr. Dolson shared the love of his gift through art education in the Bellmore-Merrick Schools and many of his students are now successfully exhibiting shows of their own. "He made a positive and lasting impression in everyone's life," said his daughter Patricia Dolson Baker, who compared his life to the film "It's a Wonderful Life." Mr. Dolson leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Patricia (Glennon); his children: Patricia Dolson Baker and her husband Lance of Bellmore; Jeff and his wife Ginny of Dix Hills, and Greg and wife Laurie of Oakton, Virginia; his grandchildren: Jessica Saley and her husband Keith of Islip Terrace; Courtenay of Dix Hills; Jennifer of Oakton, Virginia; Jacqueline Baker of Bellmore and Dale Arthur Baker of Bellmore, as well as other loved ones and friends. Mr. Dolson reposed at C.S. Bartholomew & Son funeral home in Bellmore on December 30 and 31, 2006. A funeral service was said January 2, 2007 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Amityville, followed by interment in Amityville Cemetery.
