Pearce Baker: Kehl's Marina Salesman and Avid Sailor

Longtime Copiague and Amityville resident Pearce Horne Baker, Jr. died February 1, 2007 at the V.N.S. Hospice House in East Northport, New York.

He was 78 and worked as an advertising salesman

for Kehl's Family

"He was a wonderful, courteous salesman," said Kehl's owner Joe Kehl who knew him for about 20 years. According to Kehl, Mr. Baker was a huge boat enthusiast who loved to take long trips.

Born November 12, 1931 in Columbus, Georgia to Pearce H. Sr. and Marjorie (Denmark), he lived all over the world with his family, including Rio de Janerio, Brazil, South Carolina and Connecticut. He was a graduate of Sewanee Military Academy in Tennessee, Brown University and Yale Drama School. A resident of both Copiague and Boynton Beach, Florida, he had previously lived in Amityville for 42 years.

During the Korean War he served in the U.S. Navy as a Control Tower Operator and a pilot. He later worked in Public Relations for Macy's, where he helped with the Thanksgiving Day Parade and Public Relations for the Massapequa School District and Dowling College in Oakdale. He had also worked in advertising for the Massapequa Post and the Amityville Record during the 1970's.

Mr. Baker was a member of the Amityville Community Theatre who acted and starred in many productions and was past Commodore of Narrasketuck Yacht Club who sailed Narrasketucks #79 and #184 for many years. He was also a gifted oil painter and created many pictures of his travels throughout Canada and the Eastern U.S. from his boat Kibon.

Mr. Baker leaves behind his wife of 48 and a half years, Katherine U. of Copiague; his children: Alan W. and his wife Corinne, Caryl B. Vissichelli and Cynthia L. Kohl; his daughter-in-law, Amy Baker; his grandchildren: Jason and his wife Gina, Nicholas, Christina and Amber Vissichelli, Eric, Ryan, Kaylyn, Sarah and Grace Kohl; his great granddaughter, Thea; his sister, Marjorie Stringham and her husband Gene; his stepfather, Edward Sanderson; his stepsister, Sally Sargent and her husband Ken; his aunt, Frances Heirs; as well as other loved ones and friends. He was predeceased by his son, Jon Pearce.

Father Randolph Jon Germinder, rector, St. Mary's Episcopal Church officiated a funeral service at the Powell Funeral Home, Amityville, on February 6, 2007. Private cremation and interment in Long Island National Cemetery with Military Honors was held on February 7, 2007.
