In the 21 years that she served Amityville in the Village Court, Janice Soares said she could depend on one thing: her job was never boring. The Village Court handles a high volume of cases from violations to misdemeanors and it wasn't unusual for Soares to postpone a vacation or a day off to address the constant demand.

"People don't realize how busy the court is because they don't expect a Village court to have that many cases," said Soares.

Soares started in the Village in 1986, as a parttime clerk typist in the Court, hired by Mayor Victor Niemi. She became a full-time employee several months later. When the Village Court Clerk left on maternity leave and decided not to return to work, Soares took the Civil Service test for her position, passed it and was hired by Mayor Emil Pavlik. She has worked with Village Justices Walter Saxton, James Montgomery, Debra DiSalvo and the newest Assistant Village Justice Liz Niemi, the daughter of the Mayor who gave Soares her first job in the Village.

Soares has seen major changes at the Village Court, everything from the introduction of computers and technology to the levels of security.

"One of the changes I remember most," said Soares. "was the first sound of the metal detector buzzing when we had it installed. It was good for protection but it was sad to think that we had to do that."

She can also recall a humorous situation. A defendant appeared before Village Justice Saxton and was asked if he had a job and could afford to pay a particular fine that had been levied against him for some now forgotten indiscretion.

"I have a job off the books," the defendant responded to Saxton.

Looking to avoid adding to the man's problems with an IRS infraction, Saxton held up his hands, covered his ears and said, "I didn't hear that."

The man quickly responded, repeating that he had a job off the books at the top of his lungs.

Soares grew up in Amityville and attended Amityville Schools where she met her husband Tony, a member of the Amityville Village Fire Department. The couple lived in New Jersey while Tony served in the Armed Forces, but the couple moved back to Amityville to raise their two children, Diane and Anthony. They have four grandchildren, four girls and a boy.

Over the first few weeks of her retirement, Janice and her husband have tackled a small home renovation job but look forward to more leisurely pursuits such as traveling. Janice also enjoys crafts and taking sightseeing day trips.
