Amity's Roberta Pryor celebrates 100th birthday
Mrs. Pryor grew up near Albany, New York, part of a family of three boys and four girls. Her family describes her as a wonderful cook, who maintains vivid memories of learning how to put together delightful meals at the side of her mother when she was a child. While the past made a marked impression on her, Mrs. Pryer also embraced the future. She was one of the first in her neighborhood to own a television set and was a witness to and overcame racial prejudices. Despite that she sees today's world as more violent than the one in which she grew up, particularly with the problems associated with gangs. When Mrs. Pryor was 14, she married Mr. James Pryor, a U.S. Navy veteran from World War II and a Long Island Railroad employee. In 1949, the couple moved to Amityville, where they raised their family. Mrs. Pryor has witnessed many important moments in history, including Women's Suffrage and the Civil Rights Movement. However, one of the most important historical moments for her personally came as World War II ended and she was reunited with her husband. When asked the secret to the longevity of his mother's life, her son David said that "it is the grace of God."
"She is very religious, and an avid church goer," he said. "She also eats healthy."
