Preserving history pays off

At a time when Wall Street is booming, it's ironic that a project that became one of the victims of the Depression is being revived. We are speaking of the Town of Babylon's plans to restore and preserve some of the history of American Venice inCopiague and Lindenhurst.

This unique community has its gateway along Montauk Highway and most will know it only by the towering lions that grace each side of the entrance there. But most know little about its history and the dreams of those who hoped to establish a Venetian sister City here in America.

That is about to change as the Town is documenting that history as part of its plans to restore the area, with perhaps some delightful gondola rides through its graceful canals.

The Town's move is a good one and an investment in the past that will bring a richness to its future. It comes as the Town is also investing millions of dollars into its parks, pools and recreational areas, a vital part of maintaining the character and benefits of a suburban community. All these projects mean Babylon is on the move- and that's a good thing.
