Edson Edmunds, West Islip teacher and former Amity resident

Edson H. Edmunds, a 38-year resident of Amityville, died January 19, 2007 at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Nursing Home in Arcadia, Wisconsin. He was 81 years old.

Mr. Edmunds was born May 10, 1925, to Maynard and Edna (Lutze) Edmunds in Brooklyn. His family moved to Western New York State around 1935 and lived in Cheshire, Canandaigua, Rochester, and Pen Yan, New York. Mr. Edmunds graduated from Canandaigua High School in 1943 and from Canisius College in Buffalo in 1947.

Mr. Edmunds married Marion (Pettie) Kretz on August 9, 1958 at St., Martin of Tours Church, Amityville. Their son, Michael, was born in 1959.

Mr. Edson taught for several years in Whitney Point, New York. In 1957 he accepted a teaching position at West Islip Udall Road Junior High School. After retiring from teaching in 1984, he worked as a bookkeeper for Stephen McDonough in Amityville. In addition to being a choir member at St. Martin's, he was a member of the Amityville Barber Shop Men's singing group. He was also an avid reader.

In 1996 he and his wife moved to Arcadia, Wisconsin to live close to their son, Michael and his family. Edson became a member of the Holy Family Parish there. He enjoyed being a volunteer at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare and affectionately known as "Mr. Ed." In 1999 he received the Wisconsin Care Givers award in recognition of his volunteer work.

He is survived by his son Michael, his wife Rita and their two children, Rebecca and Andrew Edmunds, all of Arcadia. He was predeceased by his wife Pettie, who died in March 1998. He is also survived by several generations of Amityville relatives from the Kretz and McDonough families, including Sister Florence Marie Kretz, Mary (Mazie)Kretz McDonough, Joan McDonough Kretz and Doris SchefferKretz.

A Mass of Christian Burial was said January 23, 2007 at the Holy Family Parish, with burial in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Arcadia.
