Public Commentary Dear Editor: On behalf of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7763 Massapequa Park, I wish to thank you for publishing the letter from Rosemary Styne of Bethpage concerning the poor condition of the American flags that are displayed outdoors. We, too, have been asking businesses and home owners to replace their flags flown outdoors when they are in poor condition. Flying the American flag shows one's pride in this great country of ours. It never ceases to amaze me that Americans do not notice (or care about) the flag of their country when it becomes shabby, torn or tattered. They care for and display their seasonal flags but neglect their American flag. Do these folks not understand that our flag represents the greatest country in the world and it defines who we are? Our flag should be respected and held in the highest esteem. When an American flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be taken to the nearest veteran's organization for proper disposal by a dignified flag burning ceremony or it may be placed in the flag drop box at the Village Hall in Massapequa Park, where its contents will be disposed of properly. On a final note, I strongly urge every American to read about American flag etiquette and the flag code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, and also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used.
