Lester E. Ketcham, former Amityville resident

Lester E. Ketcham, formerly of Amityville, died January 20, 2007 in Tampa, Florida. He was 96 years old and would have been 97 in April. He was a 12th generation Long Islander and his family was one of the founding families of Amityville. He was a Mason and a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Ketcham was born at home on Cedar Street next to the house where his father, Harry, was born. In his early years he and his father were local contractors working on many of the homes in the Village. At the beginning of World War II, Mr. Ketcham went to work for Grumman Aircraft and continued there for almost 30 years. After retiring Grumman, he spent his summers fishing and boating on the Great South Bay. He spent his winters in Bradenton, Florida. He moved permanently to Bradenton in 2001.

Mr. Ketcham is survived by his wife of 65 years, Harriet, of Tampa who taught elementary education in Amityville for many years; his son, Terry, who taught at Massapequa High School for 33 years and his wife Diane of Naples, Florida; his daughter, Sally Jane, a college music teacher and her husband Jed Tanzer of Tampa and a granddaughter E. Molly Tanzer and her husband John Gove of Tallahassee.

A Masonic funeral service was said January 24, 2007 at D'Andrea Brothers Funeral Home, 99 Oak St., Copiague. A service was also said by Pastor Stowe-Johns of the Methodist Church. That service included Amityville violinist Fred Fehleisen, playing several of Mr. Ketcham's favorite hymns. Mr. Ketcham was buried in the Amityville Cemetery alongside his parents and grandparents.
