Amityville School District community approves capital improvement referendum

By a vote of 542 to 43, voters in the Amityville School District approved accepting state funding for capital repairs. By approving this referendum, the community has enabled the district to take advantage of the state's one-time-only offer of EXCEL Aid. The district will be receiving $2,075,512 in aid to cover the cost of implementing the approved capital improvement plan. The work will not have any impact on the local tax rate.

"Moving forward with this plan will permit the district to address our highest priority repairs," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian M. De Sorbe following the vote. "Special thanks to the residents and staff who served on the planning committee and to the community for their continued support and commitment to providing our students with a quality education."

Many in the district were concerned that residents would not understand that the vote was to accept the funding and that it would not increase local school taxes. As a result, school officials put together a committee of residents and staff to review every school facility and put together a list of priorities and then spent two months in explaining the proposal to the public, gaining their input.

"The committee spent nine weeks going through all of the buildings and setting their priorities and we involved the community in this project," said the school board's 1st Vice President Juliett Jordon-Thompson. "It was comprehensive and transparent and that was an integral part of getting this vote past."

"We put everything on the table and I believe the community responded," said Trustee Nathan King. "This is all a part of working to win the public's confidence."
