Lifeguard training The Suffolk County Department of Parks is set to begin its annual lifeguard-training program in March, according to Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy. "Prospective lifeguards are required to complete a rigorous program where they will be trained in all aspects of lifeguard techniques," said Levy. Upon successful completion of the program, candidates will be offered a seasonal position as a Suffolk County Parks lifeguard for the 2007 season. The Suffolk County Parks Department provides lifeguard services at Smith Point, Cupsogue, Sears Bellows, and Meschutt Beach County Parks. Any person 16 years or older, who wants to work as a lifeguard at one of these parks, must participate in the Suffolk County Lifeguard FREE Training Program and pass the required exam. The training program will be conducted at St. Joseph's College in Patchogue from 5:45 to 9 p.m. on the following dates: March 8, 15, 22 and 29; April 26; and May 3, 10, 17 and 24, 2007. The remaining training dates and times will be held at Smith Point or Meschutt Beach County Parks and will be announced in May.
On the first night of training, candidates will need to bring proof of age, and proper attire, including a swimsuit, towel, sneakers, shorts, and change of clothing. For additional information please contact James Dooley at doole6@aol.com or visit our website at http://smithpointlifeguards.com.
