Flags in poor condition should be removed DearEditor: Since 1997 I have been writing to municipalities, everyone from the County Executive to members of the Legislature of Oyster Bay about the condition of some of the flags they fly. I have also written to CEOs of many companies when those I spoke to refuse to remove shabby flags. I am getting too old to do this on my own. I need the eyes of all good Americans to keep our flags in good repair. Recently, I requested the Knights of Columbus from St. James Parish to assist with the flag at Boston Market on the Turnpike. I feel a few weeks is all they need to purchase a new flag and fly it. The Boston Market manager says he never looks at the flag when he enters his building, but he is sure to accept American money. The Knights have come through with help. In 2001, there was a flag amendment which proposed Congress to prohibit the physical desecration of the U.S. flag. Do you suppose that flag amendment ever passed in Congress? It was the Hatch-Cleland Bill #SJ Res. T. Perhaps we should ask for it to be resubmitted. Rosemary Styne
