      DearEditor: Since 1997 I have been writing to municipalities, everyone from the County Executive to members of the Legislature of Oyster Bay about the condition of some of the flags they fly. I have also written to CEOs of many companies when those I spoke to refuse to remove shabby flags.

      President Bush has committed more than 20,000 new troops to the failed Iraq war, urging them and all Americans to sacrifice for the "noble" Iraqi cause. He declared that we must go forward with trust in the "Author of Liberty" and resist the temptation to put aside the "burdens of freedom.
