Judging partisan politics on Long Island and in DC

If Republicans and Democrats at all levels of government have one thing in common it is that they drink from a common pool of complaints. Case in point: The recent party line appointments for judges in Nassau County and the long running dispute in Congress over President George Bush's judicial appointments.

In Nassau, it's the Democrats who are calling the Republicans irresponsible for failing to approve judicial nominees. The Legislature recently approved two candidates nominated by Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi following a near failure of the votes when Democrat Leg. Roger Corbin declined to vote with his Democratic colleagues. Some political arm twisting and pleas from Supreme Court Justice Anthony Marano, the administrative judge for Nassau's Courts followed, and Corbin eventually went along with his fellow Democrats. Not a single Republican joined the yea side.

Marano pointed out to the lawmakers on both sides that the judicial posts had been open for six months and that the caseload was becoming backlogged and crushing.

In Congress, it's the Republicans who are balking about the Democrats for failing to vote on the President's nominees. They point out that Judicial appointments are within the realm of the President's responsibility and that Congress should not politicize the vote on these nominees. When they do, it is irresponsible because judicial caseloads back up and the public suffers.

Mmmm, sounds familiar.
