Copiague and Amityville school districts set vote on EXCEL funds for later this month

Amityville

On Tuesday, January 23, 2007, voters will cast their ballots on a $2,075,512 Capital Improvement Proposal that will enable the district to move forward and address its highest priority building needs at absolutely no cost to taxpayers.

While it is the responsibility of the Board of Education and administration to provide students with a quality education in a safe and secure environment, it is equally important for the Board and administration to protect the community's investment in the district's buildings and grounds. For many years, the district has been struggling to fund costly on-going escalating building infrastructure repairs. This proposal will enable the district to begin to implement its long-term plan to restore its buildings and grounds to the level students deserve and the community expects.

"This year, the district has a unique opportunity to totally fund its highest priority repairs completely through state funding without raising school district taxes," said a school official. "New York State is offering all districts in the state, including Amityville, a one-time Expanding our Children's Education and Learning (EXCEL) Aid that will fund the total cost of the proposed repairs without raising school district taxes."

In order for the Amityville School District to receive this EXCEL Aid, the community must vote on and approve the proposed Capital Projects Plan.

All eligible voters are encouraged to vote on Tuesday, January 23, 2007. The voting polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the regular school district voting locations. The district strong urges community residents to participate in this important vote.

Copiague

On Thursday, January 25, 2007, voters will cast their ballots on a proposed $11,300,000 Capital Improvement Project to address the district's highest priority building infrastructure repair and replacement needs.

School officials note that the total cost of the repairs included in this project will be completely funded through State Building Aid and EXCEL Aid and will not increase net taxes for homeowners. The State's EXCEL (Expanding our Children's Education and Learning) Aid program is a one-time-only opportunity being offered to every school district in New York State to provide additional funding support for specific types of school construction projects.

Voting will take place at Great Neck Road Elementary School on Thursday, January 25, 2007 from noon to 8:00 p.m. Please plan to take an active role in preserving the community's investment in the Copiague School District.
