Village decision to expand building department oversight is a good one

The decision by the Amityville Village Board of Trustees to hire an assistant building inspector was a good move. The Village has numerous housing projects, commercial developments and other changes either already underway or in the planning stages, all of which take a great deal of time and oversight by the Village's building department and its Inspector John Lauria. Add to that the regular work of reviewing applications from residents and commercial property owners for other things such as additions and zoning changes and it is easy to see that this department could quickly become overworked and behind schedule.

To its credit, the Village Board recognized that the additional cost of hiring an assistant inspector is an investment that will ensure that nothing falls through the cracks and residents are served in an efficient and timely manner.
