Charles Bellinger: Babylon Town Board Master Plumber
Born February 20, 1922 in Harlem, New York to Richard and Rosiland, he was raised in Amityville. After graduating from Amityville Schools he proudly served in the US Armed Services as a Merchant Marine and traveled as far as Russia. Mr. Bellinger became a master plumber, by trade, and went on to sit on the Babylon Town Board of Plumbers for many years. He was a longtime member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Copiague, where he held many positions, and was vice president of the American Legion. More than 50 years ago Mr. Bellinger decided he wanted to do something to recognize the local veterans who had served in World War II. The result was a unique piece of art work that includes 60, two-bytwo thumbnail sketches of each unit in which these veterans served, entitled "North Amityville vs. The Axis". Each Sketch lists the name of each veteran, and the branch of the Armed Services in which he served. According to his family, Mr. Bellinger moved the bell from the old Amityville church to the newly built church in Copiague. He was the chairman of Men's Day and always did as much pro-bono plumbing work for the church as he could. Mr. Bellinger leaves behind his wife of 24 years, Mary of Amityville; his children: Charlene Honig, William, Lawrence and Lisa Malvoisin; his grandchildren: Hasson, Whitney and Theo; his sister-in-law, Betty Malvoisin; his brothers-in-law: Walter and his wife Mary, Paul, Carl and his wife Trasi and Jerry and his wife Norma; his godson, Marvin Bell; his god- daughters: Evette Bell and Thrisa Mohummed; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other loved ones.
The Reverend Eugene McAshan, pastor, Bethel A.M.E. Church, Copiague, officiated at the funeral service on December 11, 2006 followed by interment in the Amityville Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville.
