Record and NYPA sponsoring First Amendment essay contest for 11 & 12 grade students

This newspaper, together with the New York Press Association (NYPA) announces the inauguration of a First Amendment essay contest for 11th and 12th grade students throughout the state. Designed to foster knowledge and understanding of the first Amendment, the statewide competition offers entrants the chance to win a first-place $10,000 college scholarship.

We'd love to see all eligible students in our readership areas participate in this contest and perhaps become a statewide winner.

The tiered-judging contest requires entrants to submit an essay (maximum 500 words) to our newspaper. First-place winners at the regional level will have their essays printed here and will automatically be entered into the statewide competition where the NYPA Foundation board members and staff will select the scholarship winner. A $250 second place and $100 third-place prize will also be awarded at the state level.

In addition, a winner will be selected from entries to our newspaper and will receive a $50 award.

Students will be asked to interpret the First Amendment in their essays and discuss the role it plays in American life. Discussions can, for example, include the First Amendment's importance with regard to school newspapers, local communities or state and federal government.

Full contest details can be obtained by students and educators by calling us at 516-798-5100 or by going to the NYPA website at www.nynewspapers.com. Completed entry forms must accompany the student essays and be emailed to us no later than February 15, 2007 at acjnews@rcn.com. Please put First Amendment entry in the subject line.

Statewide winners will be notified in early March and will be invited to attend NYPA's Annual Spring Convention in Saratoga Springs to receive their awards.
