Independence Day is a time for renewal
These great Americans expected no financial rewards for their commitment. In fact, a review of their lives shows that many suffered financially as a result of the time they gave to their country, building a democracy and ensuring the freedom of their own generation, and all generations that came thereafter.
Every Fourth of July, we celebrate their work and it's a good time to reflect on the foundation of sacrifice and service they laid down for us. As new Americans were born, they built upon the legacy of our forefathers. That foundation remains as a challenge for each new generation and a reminder that much has been given to build it strong and, therefore, much is expected. Let's renew our commitment this Independence Day for an America that stays strong through the willingness of its people to serve and sacrifice. Let's demand that our elected officials act with the conscience and commitment of those first elected to serve and let's become an active and involved citizenry willing to take control of our lives, our communities and our country.
