New York needs a civil confinement law now

Babylon Town has been at the forefront of ensuring that state and county laws governing the placement and location of sexual predators within our communities meets the requirement of the laws. Through an innovative and aggressive approach, Babylon monitors those convicted felons through the State’s sexual predators’ list to ensure they are not living within a quarter of a mile of a school, playground, park and other locations where children congregate.

Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone and the Town Board are to be commended for establishing this extra level of protection for the public they took an oath to serve and protect. And, while we applaud their efforts, the fact is that restrictions on where these convicted offenders can live does not adequately protect our children from those obsessed with deviant sexual acts.

What we need is for State officials, who also took an oath to serve and protect, to work collectively to pass a civil confinement law. This would ensure that no offender is released from prison and into the general population when they continue to be a major risk.

The State clearly recognizes the high rate of recidivism of sexual predators, and the continuing danger they pose to society after their release from prison. The statistics are clear—and frightening, yet state lawmakers continue to enact a civil confinement law. We hope the courage of our local lawmakers will shame them into action.
