Copiague Middle School hosts Keeping Kids Safe Online assembly

In response to the increased use of popular personal profile web sites such as MySpace and Friendster, the Copiague Middle School hosted an assembly

program for students

in grades six to eight to provide strategies regarding Internet safety. The p r o g r a m , which was conducted by S u f f o l k County Police Detective M i c h a e l C o n n e l l y from the C o m p u t e r Crimes Division, focused specifically on the dangers of posting personal information online.

The Internet Safety Program addressed the principles of chatting safely online, limiting profile information, cyber bullying, and threats against schools made online. The PowerPoint presentation also provided actual case examples of the techniques the police use to catch cyber predators.

In addition to the student assembly, the middle school PTA hosted a similar program for parents that encompassed the same information the students learned, as well as additional information designed to increase parent awareness of the new Internet services and technology their children are using. Other subject areas also included signs that your child may be at-risk and risk management techniques.

The Internet Safety program is an initiative that was developed by the Suffolk County Police Department and Congressman Tim Bishop’s office.

Shown in the photos, students at Copiague Middle School recently learned about Internet safety during a program conducted by Suffolk County Police Officer Michael Connelly.
