Edward Dineen, 96, Snug Harbor's unofficial "Mayor"

Well-known Amityville resident Edward A. Dineen, who worked for many years as a greeter in the Snug Harbor area, died November 6, 2006 at Broadlawn Manor Nursing Home, where he was fondly known as "the Mayor." He was 96.

Born in Brooklyn to Michael and Sara (McEvoy), he arrived in Amityville from C a m b r i a Heights, Queens, in 1974. He worked as a Transportation Manager for the Hotel Roosevelt in Manhattan before his retirement.

He served as a greeter at D'Andrea's Funeral Home in Copiague, a greeter at the gate of the Amityville Village Beach and a crossing guard at Richmond and Merrick Road. As a school crossing guard, he was known to hand out goodies to those with good report cards.

He remembered everyone he ever met, by name, according to his family, and was the oldest person to ever receive the High School Equivalency Diploma at age 95.

For many years Mr. Dineen was the weekly bingo caller at the Amityville Senior Citizen's Center and was an avid tennis player at the Snug Harbor courts, where he won a couple of first place awards in tournaments.

Mr. Dineen leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Helen D.; his children: Jane Panek and her husband John of Hilo, Hawaii, Kevin A. and his wife Margaret of Amityville and Thomas E. of East Northport; his grandchildren: Maria O'Rourke, Mark Panek, Susan Abate and Kevin P.; his great grandchildren: Dineen O'Rourke, Anthony, Andrew and Patrick Abate and Maggie from Greenpoint, Brooklyn; his sister Barbara Waskom of Virginia; his cousin, Catherine McEvoy; as well as other loved ones and friends.

He reposed at the Powell Funeral Home, Amityville, on November 9, 2006. A Mass of Christian Burial was led by Reverends Patrick Sullivan and James Dolan on November 10, 2006 at St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church assisted by the family and the Consolation Ministry, Amityville, followed by interment at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.
