John Whalen: longtime Amityville artist/columnist

L o n g t i m e Amityville resident, John J. "Jack" Whalen died October 9, 2006. He was 89- years old and worked as an artist and writer.

Born on the kitchen table of his parents house on Maple Place in 1917, he attended St. Martin's School, Amityville Memorial High School and the American School of Design in New York City. He lived in Amityville 85 years until 2002 when he moved with his wife to Fairfax, Virginia to be closer to their children.

Mr. Whalen worked as a technical illustrator and artist for Grumman Aircraft and had written his own column, "Remembering Amityville" for the Amityville Record during the 1980s. He will be remembered for his detailed artwork of ships and humorous stories about growing up in the area, according to his family. In his spare time he loved to paint and woodwork.

He leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Antoinette (Buono); his children: Janet Langen of Annandale, Virginia, Jack of Gaithersburg, Maryland and Michael and his wife Cindy of Fairfax Station, Virginia; his nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; as well as other loved ones and friends.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Annandale, Virginia on November 24, 2006 at 10 a.m. His remains will be buried at Fairfax Memorial Park, Braddock Lane, Fairfax, Virginia.
