Copiague man killed in MVA

First Squad Detectives are investigating a motor vehicle accident which claimed the life of a sixty-nine year old Copiague man.

At 6:42 p.m. Suffolk County Police patrol officers responded to a call of a man trapped under a car at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Bethpage Rd in Copiague. Officers arrived to find Pedro Cruz of 47 Bethpage Rd., Copiague under a 2003 Jeep in the westbound traffic lanes of Sunrise Highway. Officers and rescue personnel discerned no sign of life from the victim.

At the time of the crash, the vehicle was being driven by Diana Murphy,

age 43 of Westminster Lane, West Islip. According to witness accounts, Mr. Cruz stepped into the roadway while the westbound traffic had a green light facing its direction. Murphy attempted to stop, but could not avoid striking the victim. Her vehicle, a small SUV, came to rest on top of Cruz. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A steady downpour may have contributed to the accident.

The Jeep was taken to the police impound facility in Westhampton where it will undergo a safety inspection. No charges have been made in connection with this incident.
