Amityville music teachers revisit curriculum
Over the course of the summer, the team has been working towards establishing a general kindergarten through fifth grade music curriculum which would encompass a more standard based approach to music education. "We have a shared vision that our program will be more experiential, focused and in line with New York State standards," said Fernandez. As part of their planning, the group has created performance exit outcomes for ensembles, and a more intensive preparatory plan for instrumental and choral performance programs. "Our biggest concern is the needs of Amityville music students," said Fernandez. "We are focusing on what background they will need at the elementary level to be successful in the upper levels."
Shown in the photo, teachers in the music department of the Amityville Public Schools met over the summer to work on enhancing their music curriculum to improve student achievement. Pictured around the table, left to right, are Fran Fernandez, High School orchestra and district music coordinator; Nicole Altamura, Middle School band teacher; Christopher Blount, High School band teacher; Chris LaMarca, elementary band teacher and High School jazz ensemble and Carl J. Ferrara, Middle School chorus and piano lab teacher.
