Kaplans of Amityville open their home for special two year old

Harry and Joan Kaplan of Amityville had special visitors from Honduras recently. They opened their home to a two-year-old girl named Stefany and her mother, sponsored by the Amityville Rotary Club. Stefany was born with a hole in her heart and was brought here through the Gift of Life Program sponsored by the Rotary International.

Prior to the operation Stefany would tire easily and her lips would turn blue from walking a short distance. After the operation at Stony Brook University Hospital, she had the energy level of any normal two-year-old and couldn't be held down. Transportation from the airport and back and forth to the hospital was provided by members of the Amityville Rotary Club. Joan said "we are empty nesters and it was fun having a toddler in the house. They spent a month here and it was very rewarding to be part of this wonderful program and know that our contribution helped save a life." There are many other children waiting for the chance to benefit from this life saving surgery, and host families are always needed to house them for the duration of their stay here, before and after surgery.
