Copiague Class of 2006 sets high standards
Parents and invited guests stood proudly as the Walter G. O'Connell Copiague High School Class of 2006 proceeded into the gymnasium to begin the 47th commencement exercises. The high school concert band, conducted by John Wevers, performed several selections prior to the start of the ceremony as well as the traditional Pomp and Circumstance during the processional. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and Star Spangled Banner Dr. William R. Bolton, Superintendent of Schools, addressed the graduates. "In many ways you are the best class to graduate so far," stated Dr. Bolton. "You have achieved the highest number of Regents Diplomas, the highest number of Regents Diplomas with Distinction, along with a New York State Band Championship and numerous sports and drama awards. You have also demonstrated your character through numerous humanitarian relief fundraisers for both local and national causes. You have set a new standard for those who follow you. Remain true to your goals and remember the Hall of Achievement awaits you."
"You have made Copiague a better place. Now you are about to make the world a better place," stated High School Principal Michael Hodgkiss. With those final words, the Class of 2006 was officially awarded their diplomas as caps flew in the air amidst applause.
