St. David's to offer sign language classes
St. David's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Massapequa Park will be offering American Sign Language Classes this fall in the church's Fellowship Hall, 20 Clark Blvd.
Beginner adult classes will be held for eight weeks, Wednesdays, September to November 15, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Beginner children's classes will be held for five weeks, Saturdays, October 14 to November 18, 9 to 10 a.m.
St. David's established a deaf ministry more than 15 years ago and began tackling the challenge of supporting a sign-language program during its Sunday 9:30 a.m. worship. In addition to the interpreted service, the church provides social events for the deaf. As many as 125 men, women and children have gathered to socialize.
The members of St. David's Deaf Ministry offer an ongoing invitation to all, no matter what their abilities. Janis Garone, the ASL program director said that the American Sign Language Classes are open to the public but you have to call the church at 516-799-7832 to make arrangements.
