Public has additional chances for input on windmill project

2006-07-12 / Opinion

Dear Editor:

Regarding "Offshore Windmill Project environmental meeting next week", (June 29, 2006), FPL Energy is looking forward to these two meetings as the official start of the federal environmental impact review and the first opportunity in a lengthy process for community input.

After the Minerals Management Service (MMS) considers the input received at each of these public sessions, and the written comments submitted, MMS will direct the specific scope of environmental studies to be performed to analyze the proposed project.

The public and stakeholders will have additional opportunity to comment on the outcomes of those studies and the potential merits and impacts of the proposed project after MMS accepts those studies and issues the Draft Environmental Impact Statement. That will be followed by a Final Environmental Impact Statement and the process is concluded by formal agency findings.

Important energy projects deserve rigorous environmental review, and the participation of the Long Island community throughout this extended schedule is important.
