Amityville High School Varsity Golf Team members honored by Suffolk County

On Wednesday, May 31, three members of the Amityville varsity golf team were honored at the Bavarian Inn in Lake Ronkonkoma for both outstanding golf performance and outstanding academic achievement at the 2006 Suffolk County Golf Awards dinner.

Seniors, William End and Jon O'Rourke were selected to the Suffolk County All academic team for mantaining a grade point average about ninety percent. O'Rourke and Sophomore Ryan Homola earned First Team All League honors for ending the season with two of the lowest golf averages in the league. Ryan Homola, who has just completed his first season on the Amityville Varsity Golf team, also has earned All-Conference and All-County honors. Homola's greatest accomplishment this season came at the Suffolk County championship tournament held at Indian Island Golf Course on May 22 and 23. Ryan finished in a four-way tie for the ninth and final spot to make the Suffolk County team. Ryan went on to win a six-hole sudden death playoff to earn the final spot on the team that will compete in the State Championship at Cornell University. By accomplishing this task, Homola was nominated by Newsday for the High School Athletic Feat of the Week. In addition, Ryan placed fifth out of all underclassmen in the county to qualify for the Long Island Ryder cup team that will compete this summer at Bethpage State Park.

The Amityville varsity golf team plays its home matches at Bergen Point Golf Course in West Babylon. Being a part of the golf team allows students to learn the rules and etiquette of golf as well as compete on both a team and individual level. The golf team is constantly looking for students to come out for the team and enjoy the game of golf.
