Public Commentary
Dear Editor:
I was not the least bit surprised to see Supervisor Steven Bellone speaking for Legislator Wayne Horsley in your letters to the editor section. Supervisors Rich Schaffer and Steve Bellone have been so for a good number of years. Wayne served on the Babylon Town Council for eight years and not once, I repeat, not once in those eight years did I hear Councilman Horsley vote against any of the thousands of resolutions put forth by the presiding supervisor. Much like the legendary character ditto in the classic the Last Hurrah, Councilman Horsley voted "yes" each and every time the supervisor put a resolution up for a vote. Apparently, Wayne still requires a Town Supervisor to make his decisions and defend his actions.
Supervisor Bellone would like people to believe the debate over the incinerator is politically motivated. It's not. It was Supervisor Bellone who introduced politics into the debate. He also knows I have been a member of the Green Party for some time.
Supervisor Bellone would like people to believe the debate is about economics. It's not. West Babylon and Suffolk County will benefit economically at least as well as Wyandanch did, if not better. What Supervisor Bellone fails to mention is how well his and Wayne Horsley's political campaign committee ben
efited through substantial contributions from the owner and attorney for the Wyandanch power plant. Must have slipped his mind.
Supervisor Bellone would like people to believe the debate is about the environment. It's not. The proposed incinerator at Bergen Point will have to meet the same EPA and NYSDEC environmental and operational requirements as the Wyandanch plant and, the Bergen Point plant will be just as "environmentally advanced." The issue, as I apparently didn't make clear enough for Supervisor Bellone and Legislator Horsley, is ethics. The issue is simple. Why is it O.K. with Messrs. Bellone and Horsley to build a power plant in a minority, lower income neighborhood but it's not OK. to do so the same in a mostly white, upper income neighborhood?
By the way the buffer area surrounding the Bergen Point plant is a larger than the "old landfill" surrounding the power plant in Wyandanch.
So, please Mr. Supervisor, sit down and let Legislator Wayne Horsley speak for himself, for the very first time.
