Louis "Lou" de Quillfeldt, an Amityville native, loved the Great South Bay and spent his time fighting for its conservation, sailing on its crystal waters and clamming on its sandy shore. He died June 1, 2006 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip.

Born July 29, 1925 to Charles and Sara Marie (Wood) in Amityville, he grew up on Ketcham Avenue. A decorated veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European African Middle Eastern Campaign. Until his retirement, he worked as a paper salesman for the American Paper Company in Commack.

An avid conservationist, he was also a wood carver and was a member of many local groups: the Amityville Historical Society, past president of Sunrise Fish & Game Association and Unqua Corinthian Yacht Club. He was also a lifetime active member of the First United Methodist Church in Amityville.

According to his family, he will be remembered for his quick wit, radiant smile and zest for life.

Mr. de Quillfeldt leaves behind his beloved wife of 50 years, Barbara; his daughters: Billie and Catherine Bedell and her husband Brian; his grandchildren: Lauren and Dana Johnson and Dylan Louis Bedell; his brother, Charles and his wife Sandy; his two nephews: Charles and Paul; as well as many other loved ones and friends. His brother, Alfred predeceased him.

The Reverend Dr. Louise Stowe-Johns, pastor, First United Methodist Church, officiated at the funeral service in the church on June 5, 2006 followed by Military Honors at the church. A private cremation followed.

Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville.

Donations in Mr. de Quillfeldt's memory may be sent to the Nature Conservancy, LI Chapter, 250 Lawrence Hill Road, Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724.
