Lauder Museum hosts Mary P. Myton Literacry Society meeting

2006-01-11 / Front Page

The Lauder Museum was the location for the November meeting of the Mary P. Myton Literary Society hosted by Susan Martinson. President Ricciuti welcomed everyone and thanked Susan and her refreshments committee, Ann Budde, Terri Smith and Carolina D’Antonio. Following the welcome Ricciuti read a poem entitled Autumn’s Treasures by Elisabeth Weaver Wistead. Coincidentally Barbara Amodio brought some leaves that seemed to be described in the poem.

The minutes were read by Mrs. Frank Costa for Dorothy DeBevoise. Following that, D’Antonio gave the treasurer’s report. Everyone was reminded that the group will be wrapping books to earn money that will be donated to several charities. A book, Christmas Blessings by Donna Van Liere, was passed around for all to read.

General discussions then took place with several members telling about books, trips and poems and art work. Recommended by several people were 1776, Love, Loss and What I Wore, the movie Dreamer and the play Doubt. Not recommended by Donald Boyd was King of Torts by John Grisham. However Cartoon was recommended.

Teachers Chuck Femia and Jolene Maccarone presented the program, who became drama coaches and directors of the Amityville Community Players. Last year they presented the play Guys and Dolls. Femia described how he got started in drama and the influence it had on his life. From there he and Maccarone went through the process of putting on a play, including the benefits for all ages to cultivate an appreciation of the arts. Background was given showing the various aspects of creating a production, especially those "hidden" areas that do not appear on stage, but without which a play could not go on. They ended with a five-minute DVD showing of last year’s presentation. When asked what play they were doing this year they told the group that unfortunately no play was going to be put on.

Following the show, refreshments were served and the members were able to socialize.
