Peter Hemme, former

U.S. Air Force Veteran

Peter S. Hemme, a decorated United States Air Force veteran, died September 16, 2005 at Nassau University Hospital in Uniondale. He was 72 years old.

Mr. Hemme was born in Manhattan to Otto and Charlotte (Schwartz) Hemme and later served his country in the Air Force from 1953 to 1957. He received the National Defense Service and Good Conduct Medals.

Professionally, Mr. Hemme was a bus driver for the Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority in Uniondale before his retirement. He lived on Central Avenue in Amityville for 35 years.

According to his wife of 35 years, Elizabeth, her husband liked to watch old movies and attend church at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amityville.

Mr. Hemme leaves behind his wife Elizabeth, his son Peter O. of Amityville, his brother and sister-in-law Lawrence and Carole Melia of Nesconset, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He reposed at the Powell Funeral Home, Inc. in Amityville. The Rev. David W. Anglin, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, conducted a prayer service September 19, 2005. Internment was in Pinelawn Memorial Park September 20, 2005.
