The Copiague School District’s Annual Staff Conference Day, held each year prior to the start of the new school year, took on a special meaning this year as New York State Education Department Commissioner Richard Mills visited the district and complimented the Board of Education, administration, and staff.
Commissioner Mills noted that he had received numerous invitations to visit school districts on Long Island. "I like the goals that you have here in Copiague," stated Commissioner Mills. "It is amazing to see that Copiague is not the same school district it was ten years ago."
The conference day began with an impressive performance by the high school’s award-winning Madrigal Choir under the direction of Larry Wurtzel and accompanied by middle school teacher Gina Occhiogrosso. A special photo presentation created by Board of Education Trustee Brian J. Sales provided Commissioner Mills with an overview of the district, its students, and all the achievements that contribute to Copiague Pride.
"We are very proud of the academic progress we have made," stated Superintendent of Schools Dr. William R. Bolton. "However, we must all do whatever it takes to continue to provide a quality education for every student in our district."
Bolton said he felt honored and privileged to be able to welcome the Commissioner in Copiague, particularly since Mills has done so much for children in New York State.
"He has raised the bar for academic excellence and has done more for education in this state than any recent Commissioner," said Bolton.
A safe and nurturing environment, renovation to each of the district’s schools, a technology integrated K-12 curriculum that is constantly monitored for its effectiveness, and a strong focused commitment by the Board of Education, administrators, and staff have all contributed to the district’s success. "You have changed expectations in this district," stated Commissioner Mills. "It is amazing to see the relentless achievement that has taken place in the Copiague School District."
Following the conference, the staff returned to their respective school buildings to meet with the building principals for final instructions regarding the opening day of school and the goals for the new school year.
