Francis Mentel, World War II vet

Francis B. (Frank) Mentel, died Sunday, November 16 in the Indian Rock Village Nursing Home at Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. He was 94 years old.

Mr. Mentel was born in New York City February 25, 1909, the son of the late Benedict Mentel and Josefa Stocka Mental. He lived in both Astoria and Copiague until he moved to Fairfield Bay in 2002.

Mr. Mentel was a member of Jan Hus Presbyterian Church in New York City. He was a printer by trade and claimed that a very distant relative worked on the Guttenberg Bible. He was exceptionally proud to have served his country in the United States Army, during World War II as a staff sergeant with the 42nd "Rainbow" Division in the European Theatre.

Mr. Mentel is predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Alice. He is survived by his sister Mary Vajda of Savannah, Georgia and niece Marianne Horan and her husband Tom of Savannah, Georgia. Also surviving are his nephews, Albert Vajda and his wife Sharon of Greers Ferry, Arkansas and Paul Vajda of Batesville, Arkansas and his grandnieces and nephews T.J. Horan of Del Mar, California; Kimberly and Neal Rhone of Lewisville, Texas, Michael and Jordan Horan of Charleston, South Carolina, Michael and Beth Ann Vajda of Cranford, New Jersey, Steven Vajda of Oakland, California and Allison Vajda of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

A private graveside service was said November 21, 2003 at St. Michael’s Cemetery, East Elmhurst. Arrangements were under the direction of the Farnega Funeral Home, Heber Springs, Arkansas.
