Norma B. Wright, lifelong resident of Amityville
Norma B. Wright the widow of Virgil L. Wright and a lifelong resident of Amityville died May 22, 2002 following a long illness.
Mrs. Wright was the daughter of the late Alma Florence and Robert Bryant. She attended Amityville Public Schools and graduated from Browne’s Business School in Queens, New York. Under the National Youth Administration, she worked as a secretary in the Oyster Bay Office and later in the Mineola Branch.
She married Virgil L. Wright of New York City at the old Bethel AME Church in 1944. When the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, they received an acknowledgement from President and Mrs. Clinton.
Mrs. Wright was a member of the Parents Association Board. She volunteered with the Amityville Community Chest and other health-related organizations and was a Class Mother and Girl Scout leader while her daughter was growing up.
When the West Amityville Civic Association was formed in 1958 Mrs. Wright became an active member, serving as recording secretary and co-chairman for program activities.
Her interests extended to politics as well, and in 1955, she became the first black inspector in her election area. Within a few years she was Chairman of the Board.
In describing her interests in an brief autobiography she wrote before her death, Mrs. Wright said she "loved the open road, the rev of jet plane engines, classic jazz and relaxing by the water’s edge." She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles, reading newspapers and meeting new people, she said.
"She was one of the most delightful people you would want to know," said her son-in-law. "She loved life and enjoyed it to the fullest."
Mrs. Wright is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Pamela Ann and Bart Poindexter of Philadelphia; her grandson Bryant Vernon Walter of Amityville, her nieces and nephews, Barbara Robinson of Fresno, California, Marilyn Walter of Albany, Patricia Byrd and Vernon Bruce Walter of Albany and her "guardian angels" Elsie Figueroa and Amada Garcia as well as by many grand and great grand nieces and nephews, loving cousins, neighbors and friends.
Mrs. Wright reposed at the J.L. Goode Funeral Home, 545 Albany Ave., Amityville. Religious services were held at the Bethel AME Church 20 Simmons St., Copiague June 1.
