•Literacy Volunteers of America-Suffolk County, Inc. is seeking volunteers to tutor adults in the community who desire to learn to read, write and/or speak English. You will meet with your adult learner(s) for two to three hours a week in the library for at least one year. A 24-hour tutor-training workshop is required. •On Thursday, September 27, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., an officer from the Suffolk County Surrogate Court will kick off National Crime Prevention Month with an informative talk on how to keep your home safe and what to do in an emergency. Registration is for program No. 712.

•A Tribute to Gershwin will be presented, Sunday, September 30, 2 to 4 p.m. Jack Schnur will present a great audio/visual including rare performance footage and music, clips from films featuring Al Jolson, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers as well as Gershwin songs performed by Schnur.

•You can earn your GED/High School Equivalency or study English from your home, at your own pace through BOCES GRASP/HELP programs. A complete explanation of how these program work is offered at the mandatory orientation meeting at the library, Wednesday, October 3, 6 to 9 p.m. Registration is required and students may register by calling BOCES at 631-667-6000, extension 154.
